In December 2005 I was hired as the founding editor-in-chief of Dose, a Canadian media startup owned by CanWest Global. In 4 months we recruited 70 staff, kitted out an office and launched a national daily magazine and website. On April 4th (2006) 340,000 magazines hit the streets!
One of my favorite aspects of working at Dose was creating the magazine covers. We ran a news meeting/brainstorm at noon each day and then the editors and design team had eight short hours to pull it all together.
Huge amounts of credit should go to the following people, as well as the entire editorial and design team at Dose, for the incredible job they did day in and day out:
- Jaspal Riyait, Creative Director
- Duncan Clark, Deputy Editor
- Ryan MacDonald, Deputy Editor
- Basem Boshra, Deputy Editor
- Ronit Novak, Photo Editor
- Jordan MacInnis, Photo Editor
- Celine Wong, Culture Editor
- Teena Aujla, Associate Art Director
- Daniel DeSouza, Designer
- Plus all of the illustrators, cover line writers, photographers, staff who volunteered to be models and guest participants in the cover meetings!
Here are some of my favorite covers. I’ve created a little set on flickr if you’d like to see more.
